Sowbugs have seven pairs of legs and a number of rounded body segments with tail-like structures at the end of their bodies. They are usually grey or dark gray in color. Pillbugs are similar in color to sowbugs, but they don’t have the tail structures at the ends, and will curl into balls, very similar to armadillos. They even look like miniature armadillos without tails. This rolling into a ball behavior when stimulated gave rise to their nicknames as “rollie-polies.”

PILLBUGS (roly-polies)

Appearance:
Pillbugs have oval shaped, flat bodies. They are wingless and either brown or gray in color. Their bodies also have overlapping plates and seven pairs of legs.

Size:
About ¾ an inch in length.

Behavior:
Pillbugs are often referred to as “wood lice.” They’ve earned this nick name by being a nuisance to developing plants. Although they are drawn to damp areas, if they come in contact with too much water they will drown which is why they are often found floating in pools.

Habitat:
Pillbugs are drawn to damp areas such as garages but they are most likely to be found outdoors amongst wood and plants.

SOW BUGS

Appearance:
Sow-bug bodies are long, oval and flat. They are wingless and brown or gray in color. They have seven pairs of legs and overlapping plates on their bodies.

Size:
About ¾ an inch in length.

Behavior:
Sow-bugs are a menace to young plants. They feed off of their roots and can cause great problems to any gardens or greenhouses. They are drawn to damp environments. If they come in contact with too much they will drown.

Habitat:
Sow-bugs will inhabit any damp area such as garages and green houses.
