Appearance:
American cockroaches are reddish-brown in color with light markings behind the head.
Size:
1 ½- inches in length.
Behavior:
American roaches are outdoor roaches, but they can and will migrate inside by crawling or flying into structures. They are even able to enter through the plumbing. The American roach is will eat almost anything. It prefers sweets and has been observed eating paper, boots, hair, bread, fruit, and other dead insects. Due to their closeness with human waste, they carry a lot of human bacteria, viruses and fungis.
Habitat:
The American cockroach is often found living indoors as well as outdoors. They are most commonly found in basements, sewers, and drainage systems. They can also be found in moist areas outside, in yards, hollow trees, wood piles, and mulch.

Appearance:
Australian cockroaches are reddish-brown to dark-brown in color. They have yellow strips on their wings.
Size:
Range from 1 1/4 to 1 3/8 inches in length.
Behavior:
Australian cockroaches often eat clothing, creating holes, and also feed upon book covers.
Habitat:
Australian roaches prefer to live outdoors around the perimeter of houses. Australian cockroaches are commonly found in: leaf litter, flowers, trees, tree holes, wood piles, garages, crawl spaces, attics, green houses, and in and around shrubs.

Appearance:
Brownbanded cockroaches are light brown to glossy dark brown in color. There are two pale-brown bands on the wings.
Size:
Approximately 5/8-inch in length.
Behavior:
Brown banded cockroaches are nocturnal and able to fly. Female Brown banded cockroaches will leave egg capsules in clusters on furniture, wall decorations, shelving, draperies and ceilings. The egg capsule can contain 14 to 16 eggs. They feed on starchy materials, and will even eat non-food items such socks, clothing etc.
Habitat:
Brown banded roaches prefer to live in warm, dry, higher areas. They are commonly found near ceilings, behind wall decorations, behind loose wallpaper, in closets, and in electrical appliances.

Appearance:
The Florida Woods cockroach is dark reddish-brown to black in
color and has a wide glossy body. At first it appears to be wingless, but does have very short wings just beneath its head.
Size:
About 1 ½ to 2-inches in length.
Behavior:
The Florida woods cockroach produces a foul-smelling fluid to protect themselves from predators.
Habitat:
Florida Woods cockroaches are most commonly found in mulch, wood piles leaf litter, and under rotting logs. They prefer damp locations with lots of moisture. Inside of the home they are commonly found in bathrooms.

Appearance:
German roaches are either brown or dark brown in color. Males and females are able to be identified because males have a more slender body.
Size:
About ½-inch in length.
Behavior:
German roaches are the most popular cockroaches in the United States. German roaches breed continuously. The female German roach is able to produce millions at one time.
Habitat:
German roaches are most likely to be found in apartments, homes, restaurants and supermarkets. They usually stay close to food and moisture. They survive amongst warm temperatures they are unable to withstand cold temperatures.

Oriental roaches are another common, indoor species of roaches in Florida. They also vary in color from Black to brown, but their wings don’t cover the entire body in the males.
SPECIAL NOTE: If you see whitish cockroaches around your house, they are usually not albinos: they are roaches that have recently molted and have not changed the color of their exoskeletons yet.
Appearance:
Oriental roaches are either dark brown or black. They have a glossy appearance. The males have a wider body then the females.
Size:
About 1 inch in length
Behavior:
Oriental cockroaches are harder to get rid of than other roaches. Although they can be killed with insecticide, their eggs are harder to demolish. Their nests are not easily found during daytime hours.
Habitat:
Oriental roaches are often referred to as “water bugs” because they like dark moist places. They can be found in drains, sewers etc.

Appearance:
Smokey Brown cockroaches are mahogany brown or black.
Size:
1 ¼-inch in length.
Behavior:
They are extremely well fliers which allows them to easily travel from trees onto homes. They are commonly found feeding on pet food on patios. They are fond of light and attracted to well lit areas.
Habitat:
Smokey Brown cockroaches are mostly found outdoors in tree holes or upon leaf litter. Inside of homes they are most likely to be found in the attic.

Appearance:
Surinam cockroaches are shiny brown or black. They have a very light, White band on the front edge of their pronotum.
Size:
About ¾-inch in length.
Behavior:
Female Surinam cockroaches do not need a male to reproduce. She retains an egg capsules inside of her abdomen and gives birth to live young.
Habitat:
Surinam cockroaches are known as “burrowing” insects. They are capable of destroying a variety of plants. They are often brought inside unknowingly by potted plants.
