AFRICANIZED HONEY BEES

Appearance:
Africanized honey bees have a variety of colors ranging from yellow to black. They are completely identical to other types of honey bees. The only way to tell the difference between them is through DNA testing or a microscopic laboratory analysis..

Size:
Approximately ½ and inch in length.

Behavior:
Africanized honey bees are the most aggressive type of bee. They are known to make their attack in larger groups. They produce less honey and wax then regular honey bees. High pitched noises trigger them to swarm and attack. The danger of Africanized honey bees is extremely high because they attack in large numbers. They will chase an intruder for as much as a quarter of a mile.

Habitat:
Nests can be found inside of hollow trees. Sometimes they may also be found in cracks or caves of rock formations. Attics, crawl spaces or wall voids in your home can also serve as a nesting ground.

CARPENTER BEES

Appearance:
Carpenter bees are very similar to bumble bees sharing almost the same size and colors black and yellow.

Size:
Approximately 1-inch long.

Behavior:
Carpenter bees are highly attracted to natural wood. Carpenter bees are a menace to structures because they bore into the surface of the wood that is the back face of the trim under the eaves. While they bore and buzzing(drilling) sound is heard. If there is no hole visible, sawdust usually can be seen under the area that they have been working on, usually the backside of a structure.

Habitat:
Carpenter bees build nests in wood. The female carpenter bees job is to chew into the wood hollowing out the chamber. After hollowing she then deposits a mass of pollen and nectar into the chamber where she will then lay her egg. She then plugs the chamber with chewed wood pulp, and she will then continue until she has laid six to eight more eggs.

HONEY BEES

Appearance:
Honey Bees have a variety of colors from yellow to black and will have a solid or striped abdomen that is often encircled with opposing color bands. They will frequently be seen carrying pollen on their hind legs. They can sting, and will leave the stinger behind pulsing as it empties its venom into the unlucky victim.

Size:
About a ½-inch long.

Behavior:
Honey bees are very social bee. They usually consist of a single queen, between 6,000 and 60,000 workers, and a few hundred to a few thousand drones. Their colonies survive for several years and reproduce by swarming. Honey bees provide over 200 million pounds of honey a year.

Habitat:
Honey bee nests are found inside hollow trees and can occasionally be found inside of caves or cracks in rock formations. Inside of a home honey bees may form a colony inside an attic, a crawl space, or a wall void. Honey Bees are also commonly found in flowering gardens.

CICADA KILLER WASP

Appearance:
Cicada killer wasps have a black body with yellow marks across the thorax and abdomen. They have a large stinger, and the sting can be very painful.

Size:
Cicada killer wasps are very large, between 1 1/8 and 1 5/8 inches long.

Behavior:
Cicada killers are solitary wasps. Males tunnel out of the ground to select a new territory for mating. Shortly after mating, females dig deep burrows, and upon completion seek out a cicada, paralyze it with a sting, and lay an egg on the paralyzed body. Within two weeks, the egg hatches into a larva, eats the cicada, and develops into a pre-pupal stage over winter. Adults emerge in the spring to repeat the cycle.

Habitat:
Cicada killer wasps prefer areas with little or no vegetation, and will nest in lawns, parks, sandy lots, or the edges of forests. They will be more prevalent in areas where annual cicadas are present.

PAPER WASPS

Appearance:
Paper wasps are reddish-orange to dark brown or black in color. They have yellowish markings on the abdomen. Paper wasps are long and slender with a narrow waist.

Size:
Range from ¾ to 1-inch in length.

Behavior:
Paper wasps are social insects, living in colonies containing workers, queens, and males. Queens emerge during April or May, select a nest site, and build a small paper nest in which the eggs are laid. Adults feed on nectar or other sugary solutions, and bits of caterpillars or flies that are caught and partially chewed to be fed to their young.

Habitat:
A Paper wasp nest is a round, upside-down paper comb that is attached by a single stalk to a horizontal surface. This paper nest resembles an umbrella, hence this wasp’s nickname: "umbrella wasp".

Paper wasps will build their nests under awnings, beneath decks, under porches, in the corners of windows, and beneath soffits. They will also sometimes nest in attics, gas grills, hose reels, and electric outlet boxes.
