ACROBAT ANTS
Appearance:
Acrobat ants are light red, brown or black. They have shiny bodies and a stinger. Their abdomen is heart-shaped and
when irritated bends up over their thorax.
Size:
Their length is 1/8-inch to more than 1/4-inch.
Behavior:
Acrobat ants are brisk to bite and let out an odor when they are disturbed. Acrobat ants are known to consume a wide variety of foods including sweets, proteins and honeydew.
Habitat:
Acrobat ants most often build their nests in trees. They are very dominate and will be the only colony to exist in their chosen tree. They may also be found in damp or rotted wood.

Appearance:
Argentine ants are either light brown or brown.
Size:
Their length ranges from 1/11-inch to 1/10-inch.
Behavior:
They are often a moving trail in large numbers. Their trails are similar to the trails of white-footed ants. You can distinguish this because Argentine ants move more quickly and are more slender. Outdoor eating areas and parked cars are at high risk.
Habitat:
Argentine ants consist of multiple queen nests with a lot of subcolonies. The subcolonies contain millions of ants. Their nests can be found in soil, mulch, near tree roots, in trees, in rotten wood, or garbage piles.

Appearance:
Big-headed ants are either a light brown color or a dark
reddish brown color. Major workers have heads that are
larger then their bodies.
Size:
About 1/16-inch to 1/8-inch in length.
Behavior:
Big-headed ants are found in trails that are usually located not to far from their nest. Their trails can often be covered with soil, which may be mistaken for sub-termite foraging tubes.
Habitat:
Big-headed ants form huge colonies that range from 1000-10,000. They feed on seeds and insects and on occasion, honeydew. They prefer high-protein foods therefore inside they seek meats, peanut butter, pet foods, grease, liver, molasses, and fruit juices.

Appearance:
Caribbean crazy ants are golden-brown to reddish-brown in color. Dense hairs cover their entire body.
Size:
Their length is about 1/16-inch to 1/8-inch.
Behavior:
The Caribbean Crazy ants are constantly on the prowl both solid and liquid foods. Any household foods, fruits, seeds, honeydew and garbage are their priority. The name carribbean crazy was derived from their crazy and speedy behavior.
Habitat:
Caribbean Crazy ants are the most popular in South Florida. Trails consisting of thousands can be found moving along sidewalks, buildings, and gardens.

Appearance:
Carpenter ants have either a ashy brown or a rusty orange
head with a black abdomen.
Size:
Length is about 3/16-inch to 1/2-inch.
Behavior:
Carpenter ants plunder in trails that go 300 feet or possibly further from their nest. Building doors, window frames, eaves, utility lines and plumbing eaves allow Carpenter ants to gain access to their targeted structure. Their bites are described as an awful pinch.
Habitat:
Sweets and proteins are their main diet. Carpenter ants nests are often found close to food sources and moisture. They avoid birds and lizards, places that may flood and stressful environments.

Appearance:
The head and thorax of a Compact Carpenter ant are brown head. Their abdomen is a blackish color.
Size:
Range from 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch in length.
Behavior:
Workers forage in scattered or individual trails. They remain active all day long and will feed on a large variety of liquids and/or solid foods.
Habitat:
The most popular habitat of these ants are in dead wood, voids in tree trunks, leaf axel bases inside palms, in hollow twigs and even rotted ends of fence rails.

Appearance:
Fire ants have a reddish brown body, a darker shaded
abdomen and a stinger.
Size:
Length is about 1/16-inch to 1/4-inch.
Behavior:
Fire ants can cause serious agricultural, property and medical damage. They are extremely aggressive ants that will give a painful sting repeatidly to the intruder of their colony. They feed on any high-protein food , animal matter and plants.
Habitat:
Fire ants are most likely to nest outside among exposed soil or lawns where they can receive a good amount of sunlight.

Appearance:
Ghost ants have a dark head and thorax. Their absomen and legs are pale.
Size:
Their length is less than 1/16-inch
Behavior:
Ghost ants are commonly refered to as the “sugar ant.” When disturbed, ghost ants will run rapidily. The small size of ghost ants allows them to easily gain access into home through the tiniest cracks in foundation. They are most likely to be found inside of bathrooms and kitchens coming from sinks. They are in constant search of moisture. Ghost ants normally feed on other insects and honeydew but once they are inside of a home they will consume any type of sweet.
Habitat:
Ghost ants nest inside of plants and any area that remains moist. If they gain access inside of a home they will form nests inside of spaces between cabinets and baseboards as well as any wall void.

Odorous house ants are dark brown or black in color.
Size:
They are about 1/8th of an inch long.
Behavior:
Odorous house ants feed on sweets, meats, honeydew and dead insects. When crushed or stepped on they give off a smell similar to a rotten coconut.
Habitat:
Odorous house ants nest outdoors in soil under objects like stone, mulch, logs or debris. Indoors, they will nest in any moist or warm area like floor voids.

Pavement ants are either brown or black in color.
Size:
About an 1/8th of an inch long.
Behavior:
Pavement ants swarm among food. Their diet can include meats, honey, bread crumbs, grease, nut cheese, other insects, seeds, plant sap and honeydew.
Habitat:
Pavement ants will nest in soil under objects like slabs, in pavement cracks, in walls, insalation and under floors. Pet food bowls are a popular swarming area for these ants.

Appearance:
Pharaoh ants have a pale yellow to reddish body, and black shading on the top and rear portion of their abdomen.
They have a stinger.
Size:
Range from 1/16-inch to 1/12-inch in length.
Behavior:
Pharaoh ants feed on sweets and dead insects. They forage in strong, tightly linked trails. They have multiple queens and multiple nesting locations.
Habitat:
In sub-tropical areas Pharaoh ants readily nest outside in leaf debris found on or near structures. Once inside your home, they can nest in wall voids, cabinets, boxes of food, and any other accessible crevices and spaces. Re-invasion of the structure can occur throughout warm parts of the year.

Appearance:
Thief ants are yellow to light brown in color with very small eyes. They have a small stinger.
Size:
1/32-inch long.
Behavior:
Thief ant colonies are usually small. Their colonies can consist of few hundred to several thousand workers and queens. They commonly nest close to other species of ants.
Habitat:
Thief ants nest outdoors under stones, and logs etc. They often nest near larger ands, from whom they will steal food and young larvae. If they form a habitat in your home, they will build nests in the walls or the foundation. Thief ants will feed on meat, grease, seeds and/or dead insects.

Appearance:
White-footed ants are dark, usually black, in color. Their legs are very pale, giving rise to the name "white-footed".
Size:
1/8-inch long.
Behavior:
White-footed ants feed on plant nectars and honeydew produced on plants by aphids. They will also feed on dead insects and other protein. They are commonly found foraging along branches and tree trunks, and will send scouts out to lay trails to new food sources. They will enter structures through any small openings, and trail heavily on and in the building. They frequently are seen in kitchens and bathrooms, feeding on both liquid and solid foods that are found there.
Habitat:
White-footed ants will build their nests at or above ground level in numerous locations around a home. They are frequently found in trees, bushes, under leaf litter, or in loose mulch around the exterior. Once inside your home, they are found in wall voids and attics. Their colonies are large, and they seem to be interconnected with other nests in the same area.
